Brothers

William Tecumseh Sherman & Ulysses S. Grant

After Sherman's successes in Georgia in the fall of 1864, a bill was introduced in Congress to promote him to Lieutenant General, with a view of him replacing his commander and friend Grant as commander of the Union Army. Sherman vehemently declined the promotion with this memorable declaration of loyalty.

"General Grant is a great general. I know him well. He stood by me when I was crazy, and I stood by him when he was drunk; and now, sir, we stand by each other always."
